OC Literacy — Pathways to Learning is a community-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting adult learners in Orange County, North Carolina.
We provide free, one-to-one literacy tutoring for adults who want to strengthen their reading, writing, math, and English language skills. Whether someone is just getting started, preparing for a high school equivalency exam, or working toward personal or professional goals, we meet learners where they are and build from there.
All instruction is offered at public, community-based locations such as libraries and community centers, creating a welcoming and accessible learning environment.
Our Approach
We believe adults learn best when they feel respected, supported, and understood. Our tutoring relationships are learner-centered and strengths-based, focusing not only on skill-building but also on confidence, persistence, and dignity.
Instruction is free, flexible, and tailored to each learner’s goals and pace.
Our Roots
We build on years of experience serving adult learners in Orange County. Our work is grounded in strong community partnerships and a deep belief that literacy opens doors — for individuals, families, and communities.
Our Board and Staff
OC Literacy is guided by a dedicated volunteer board and supported by community members with experience in adult education, nonprofit leadership, and community service.
Our work is grounded in strong partnerships and a shared commitment to expanding access to literacy education for adults across Orange County.

Diana Daniel-Lorente, Executive Director/Program Manager
With a deep sense of justice and as a GED graduate myself, I understand firsthand that access to education isn’t equal. My learning journey continues to shape my commitment to accessible, respectful, and affirming education.
I served as Program Manager at Orange Literacy for over nine years. When the organization closed, I helped launch OC Literacy to continue supporting adults in building academic skills within a supportive, community-based setting.
I have a Master’s degree in Adult Education from the University of Georgia and a Nonprofit Management Certificate from Duke University, with years of experience teaching and managing programs for low-income adult learners. I love my work!
Outside of this work, I enjoy music, photography, gardening, books, and spending time with my two college-aged sons — when I can catch them.

Wendy Robertson, Board Vice President
I have volunteered in adult literacy for more than five years. I have always loved to read and understood the importance of reading.
Learning to read can boost self-confidence, lead to more job opportunities, and even help our children on their paths in life.
It is never too late to learn reading skills. Some people learn to read in their 60s. It is a privilege to help others on the path to literacy.

Tom Gibson, Board Secretary
After retiring as an Information Services Director for various corporate and municipal agencies, I volunteered at Orange Literacy for 9 years, where I taught many classes for adult learners in local schools, libraries, and correctional centers throughout Orange County. In 2024, I was bestowed the Governor’s Award for Volunteer Service in recognition of my efforts.
I have a BS in Economics from the Pennsylvania State University, a BA in Accounting from William Paterson University, and an MBA from the University of Connecticut. In my retirement, I enjoy gardening, assembling wooden puzzles, and reading non-fiction books.

Katreen Akyladyous, Board Member
I have a professional background in education and a deep belief in the power of learning. My journey began at Orange Literacy, where earning my GED provided the knowledge and confidence I need to become a teacher. I am a teacher.
Today, I am dedicated to using my experience to create better opportunities for our community and to ensure that every learner has a path to success.
As a mother of two young children, I see firsthand the profound impact that quality education has on the next generation’s future. In my free time.
I find great joy in reading and baking.
